Pull Up Roller Banners Guide
What Are Pull Up Roller Banners?
Pull up roller banners, also known simply as pull up banners or roller banners, are one of the most popular tools for portable advertising. But what exactly are they? In simple terms, a pull up banner is a self-standing display that consists of a printed banner graphic and a retractable base unit. When it's time to display, you pull the banner graphic up out of the base and attach it to a support pole, much like pulling down a window blind but in reverse (and vertical!). When you're done, the graphic rolls back down into the base for storage.
These banners are typically made of a durable vinyl material for the graphic, and the base is usually aluminium, containing a spring mechanism that keeps the banner tensioned. Standard pull up banners come in various widths (commonly around 800mm to 1000mm) and are about 2 metres tall when assembled. In fact, at Best at Printing we offer a full range of sizes – you can explore them on our Pull Up Roller Banners page. But whatever the size, all pull up banners share the same core design and purpose.
One of the key advantages is that anyone can set them up in a matter of seconds – no special tools or expertise required. This makes pull up roller banners a go-to solution for businesses of all sizes looking to make a big impact with minimal hassle.
Why Use a Pull Up Banner?
Pull up banners have remained so popular in the UK and around the world for a few good reasons:
- Portability - The entire banner stand packs down into a small bag. You can sling it over your shoulder or toss it in the boot of a car. This portability means you can bring a professional-looking banner to any event, even if you're traveling by train or on foot.
- Ease of Setup - As mentioned, setting up a pull up banner is straightforward. One person alone can do it. This is ideal at events when you're juggling many tasks – you don't want to struggle with complicated displays.
- Professional Appearance - Pull up banners, despite being easy to use, look very polished. The graphic is held taut and flat, presenting your message cleanly. Unlike a poster taped to a wall or a banner that needs to be tied up, a roller banner stands tall and proud by itself.
- Reusable - These banners are not one-and-done. You can use them over and over again at different events, in your office, or in a shop. As long as your message or branding remains relevant, a well-cared-for banner can last for years.
- Space-Efficient - When floor space is at a premium, vertical banners shine. They take up very little ground area (just the footprint of the base), making them great for crowded exhibit booths or retail aisles.
- Cost-Effective - Compared to many other forms of advertising signage (like elaborate booths or electronic displays), pull up banners are relatively inexpensive. They offer a great return on investment given how many times they can be reused.
In short, a pull up banner delivers maximum impact for minimal effort and cost. It's the perfect ally for anyone who needs to set up a visual display quickly and make it look good.
Common Sizes and Types of Roller Banners
While the concept is the same across all pull up banners, there are a few variations and sizes to be aware of:
- Standard Width Banners - These are usually around 800mm to 850mm wide, and are the bread-and-butter of banner stands. They're compact, easy to fit into most spaces, and still provide a great visual punch. Most first-time buyers start with this size.
- Wide Banners - Anything above 1m (1000mm) wide we consider a wide or extra-wide banner. Common large sizes include 1200mm, 1500mm Wide Roller Banners, and even up to 2000mm (2m) wide. These are designed for bigger impact or larger venues.
- Double-Sided Pull Up Banners - Some banner stands can display two graphics back-to-back. This is useful if foot traffic comes from both directions, people can see your message from either side. Essentially it's two banners in one stand.
- Outdoor Roller Banners - A standard pull up banner is generally meant for indoor use or calm conditions. However, there are specially designed roller banners for outdoor use, featuring heavier bases (sometimes fillable with water or sand) and more wind-resistant graphics. These can be great for fairs or outdoor events, although classic outdoor PVC banners (hung on fences or walls) are another alternative for windy conditions.
Premium vs Economy Banners
Within any size category, you'll find a range of quality options. Economy models are more budget-friendly, they're perfectly fine for occasional use. Premium models cost a bit more but are built to withstand frequent use and assembly/disassembly. Premium bases might be sturdier, with nicer finishes and more robust retracting mechanisms (ideal if you're touring with the banner or using it very regularly).
How to Set Up a Pull Up Banner - Step-by-Step
Setting up your banner stand is straightforward. Here's a quick guide to avoid any hiccups:
- Unpack the Banner - Take the banner base out of its carry case. Also retrieve the folded/telescopic pole (usually stored in the base or the bag).
- Extend the Pole - Connect the pole pieces together (they might bungee-cord snap into each other) or extend it if it's telescopic. Place the pole into the slot on the base.
- Pull Up the Banner Graphic - With one hand, hold the base steady on the floor. With the other hand, grab the top bar (the crossbar attached to the top of the graphic) and slowly pull the banner up. The graphic will emerge from the base. Walk backwards as you raise it, keeping it taut.
- Secure to the Pole - Once the banner is fully unrolled, you'll see a hook or groove on the back of the top bar. Attach this to the top of the pole. On a single-sided banner, it's straightforward. (On a double-sided, you'd have two banners to hook, which is a bit more juggling but similar process.)
- Position the Banner - If your base has stabilising feet, make sure they've been flipped out. Position your banner where you want it. If it's not quite straight, adjust the feet or rotate the base slightly until the banner stands perfectly vertical.
- Done - Step back and admire your setup. It should be smooth and taut. If it looks a bit slack, check that the pole is fully extended and securely in place at both bottom and top.
Taking it down is just as easy, just reverse the steps: unhook the top, walk it back down into the base (don't let it snap down too quickly), collapse the pole, and stow everything back in the bag.
Caring for Your Roller Banner
To get the most life out of your banner:
- Roll Down Slowly - Always retract the banner slowly and in a controlled manner. Letting it whip back into the base can damage the spring mechanism or cause the graphic to wrinkle.
- Store in its Case - When not in use, keep the banner in its carry bag. This protects it from scratches or dents to the base and keeps dust off the graphic.
- Avoid Extreme Conditions - Don't leave your banner in a very hot car trunk for too long (the heat can warp parts or make the adhesive on the graphic soft), and avoid damp storage places (to prevent any mould or print damage).
- Clean Gently - If the graphic gets a bit smudged or dusty, a dry cloth can wipe off most dirt. Avoid using chemicals or soaking the banner. A slightly damp cloth can be used for tougher smudges, but ensure the banner is dry before rolling it back in.
- Mind the Mechanism - If you ever notice the banner not retracting properly or the spring feels loose, it might be a sign of wear. While these stands last a long time, the mechanisms can eventually tire out after a lot of use. If that happens, contact us – we might be able to replace just the base unit or advise on a fix.
When to Consider Other Displays
Pull up roller banners are versatile, but in some cases, another type of display might complement or even work better for your needs:
- If you're outdoors in a windy environment, consider Outdoor PVC Banners or mesh banners that can be tied securely to railings or structures. They handle wind much better, whereas a pull up banner might tip over if it's gusty (even the outdoor stands have their limits).
- For a very permanent indoor display or signage that stays up long-term, a rigid sign (like a Foamex or Dibond board) could be more appropriate, as pull up banners are ideally for temporary setups and events.
- If you need something even more impressive in a lobby or showroom, you might look at pop-up display walls (those large curved walls) or digital displays. However, those come with higher cost and complexity.
- To accompany your banners, don't forget other print materials. Poster Printing can provide larger graphics for wall display, and brochures or flyers on a counter can give detailed information that people can take away after seeing your banner.
Often, the best approach is a mix: use a pull up banner as the attention-grabber and primary message carrier, and have supporting materials or signs as needed.
